![]() ![]() The First World War saw the introduction of the use of airplanes to drop leaflets over enemy forces and civilian populations alike. When these were directed at enemy forces, or populations in occupied countries, new ways of circulating material was needed. Mass production and circulation of a variety of publications was one means of influencing opinion. In Britain, it was estimated that 40 million items were manufactured for overseas use during 10 months in 1917 alone. Material was produced in huge quantities. All these factors came together to convince leaders of states of the importance of propaganda, and of coordinating propaganda efforts. This included the subjects of colonies in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, as well as neutral countries, to appeal for resources or financial support to continue the fight. The global nature of the war meant that the European powers needed to convince those around the world to support them. For many countries, advances in political representation meant that a greater proportion of the population (although still almost exclusively men) now had an influence on the direction of state policy, and could remove governments perceived as not acting in their interests. World War I has been described as the first “Total War,” a term that describes both the industrialization of warfare and the ability of new weapons to reach far beyond conventional battlefields.įor the first time, entire populations – women and children included – would be required to maintain the rate of production needed for food, clothes, and munitions to keep armies fighting. In Propaganda Power and Persuasion, an exhibition held at the British Library in 2013, we argued that World War I marked a turning point for state use of propaganda both in war and during peace. However, it is not until the early decades of the 20 th century that the use of propaganda in war became both as widespread and as significant as we see it today. Roughly 2,500 years ago, the Chinese general Sun Tzu, writing in The Art of War, stated that, “to subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.” Total War Xenophon is credited with recording the earliest use of misinformation in wartime in his accounts of the Greek wars with Persia around the beginning of the 4 th century BC. ![]() In ancient Greece, Aristotle wrote about the importance of understanding what motivates audiences when preparing to speak in public. Societies have used and lived with propaganda from the earliest civilizations. The use of propaganda in wartime is not a modern invention. ![]() World War I saw mobilization of propaganda on an unprecedented scale, which continues to form an important part of warfare to this day. ![]() ![]() ![]() Indelningsverket now gives +10% manpower. In fact, every single page offers something that you can use to improve your life to become successful in every way, not just financially or materially, as some people consider success defined as such. This is a fantastic book, with all the lifestyle advice you could possibly consider. Worth the read, for sure, and given its length, I'm sure I'll reread it. I'm curious to see how much of it sticks with me and how much is forgotten. A little more testosterone in Christian evangelism could certainly profit the world.įunny how many of my "heroes" could easily be classed as "Rhinos." One of my pastors seems like he applies the rhinoceros approach to evangelism more appropriately than the book does (he's a former Marine too, though). It seemed more namby-pamby than I would have hoped. It was a little weird given how he addresses everything else. My main caveat was the weak Christian message. If you read the whole thing and remain hung up on that, well, OK, but I think you are missing the point and are failing to profit from something worthwhile. It seems childish in some ways, but I think the author knows that and meant for it to be. The corniness initially surprised me and put me off, but, well, I charged through that and eventually grew to like both the book and the style. ![]() Like many, I read this because Dave Ramsey recommended it. For the rest of the population it might spur them to charge forward as rhino, or it might simply highlight how much they are not like a rhino and be discouraging. For type A personalities, this book would be very encouraging. He does include some scripture quotations in "Rhinoceros Success", but again, this booked lacked the spiritually deep content that would have made it great. Alexander does encourage his readers to try God and to read the Bible (in secret if they need to), but stops short of fully endorsing a life surrendered to following Christ and what that might look like for a rhino. However, it seemed to lack much Biblical content. This book was quite motivating and a quick and enjoyable read. ![]() Alexander teaches his readers to be rhinos as they tackle diverse areas of life such as financial, social and physical. We have to charge forward like a rhino might and work hard to get where/what we want. We all want something out of life, but it is not going to come to us in a brand new car. "Rhinoceros Success" gives tips and encouragement to motivate the readers to get up and get moving. Rhinoceros success comes from being a rhinoceros ALL the time."īut the real take home message comes on page 51, "You don't need to read 'Rhinoceros Success' or any other book to live your life successfully. "Do you know how to make a rhinoceros float? Root bear, one scoop of vanilla ice cream and one scoop of rhinoceros! Remember this extremely funny, side-splitting, hilarious joke, because it will remind you to put rhinoceros into everything you do. It is written in a jovial and simple way and peppered with 'comedy'. Keeping a family together and happy takes a rhino." To do that, just be your rhinoceros self. You should just be successful in the six main areas of your life (financial, work, family, physical, social, and spiritual) and then you will be successful in those areas. But it doesn't say this, it says that you should be a rhinoceros (literally) and you will be successful. The worst that can happen is death, and that's not really a concern.Įssentially the book says that success starts with an attitude of success. You should shoot first and ask questions later, belittle those who are less successful, you should blow steam from your nostrils, and you should charge head first into anything. Instead, Mulan grabs his sword and rides her horse under cover of darkness, reporting for duty to the stern commander (Yen) with her hair tucked under a cap and her voice slightly lowered. Mulan’s family has no sons, so her father-a wounded warrior himself-must join to maintain honor. We first see the character as a playful, acrobatic young girl (played by Crystal Rao), climbing up and leaping across rooftops in her village to chase a chicken in a bit of foreshadowing of the action to come. The bones of “Mulan” remain familiar, though. As gorgeous as the film is-the work of countless talented women behind the scenes, including cinematographer Mandy Walker and costume designer Bina Daigeler-it’s not quite the same watching it at home, even on a giant TV, even with an enthusiastic, movie-loving kid on the couch next to you. One particular moment of solidarity and validation caused my heart to get caught in my throat, and it’s one of many instances that made me wish I was watching “Mulan” in a packed theater. Liu’s performance might have been more powerful if she’d been a bit more emotive, but the steeliness and physicality she displays make her a convincing fighter.Ĭaro is a perfect choice to helm this live-action “Mulan,” having made her name nearly two decades ago with another story of a determined girl who dared to buck the patriarchy, 2002’s “ Whale Rider.” Working from a script by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek, Caro interweaves the story’s ancient poetic roots with Easter eggs from the 1998 animated film-although there’s no wacky dragon sidekick, alas-but it’s very much its own artistic endeavor, and is by far the most effective and necessary of all the live-action remakes of Disney’s animated catalog that we’ve seen in recent years.Ĭaro’s take on the tale, as mainstream and family-friendly as it is, also carries the unmistakable spirit of the #MeToo movement: women standing up for themselves and each other and demanding that men hear and believe them. Just as important is the fact that she finds her voice over the course of this journey-a phenomenon specific to this character and this story, but one that couldn’t be more resonant for women of all ages watching all over the world, right now. ![]() ![]() At the center is the lovely Yifei Liu, who’s called upon to show a great deal of range as Mulan transforms herself from brazen, impetuous rebel to mature, commanding leader. ![]() ![]() ![]() I did crave some clear roads though after a while this is white knuckle racing.
